Burrito Units
Ever since the INR - USD conversion went below the 40 : 1 ratio, I've been hearing frequently about dollar value, rupee, inflation, capitalism, growing economy, stocks, shares - some of which I'm just making up on the fly. I should admit, I've never understood any of this too well.. Having grown up in a house of bankers, I'm so well trained to let such discussions pass through me retaining almost 0% content.. Not that I don't understand the value of money its just that I wouldn't lose sleep thinking about multiplying it..
Moving from India to US you notice many lifestyle changes, but the change in currency was the first to hit me when I landed in US about three years back.. I had no idea if something was expensive or affordable or just plain cheap.. Everything changed from Rupees to Dollars.. and my Indian brain was trained to do a 'multiply-by-45' in no time.. I was suddenly paying 40000 Rupees rent for my apartment and some gazillion amounts for tuition.. Internet, Coke, Telephone were all comparable... And Free pizza sounded like jackpot.. It was too much for my monetarily-challenged mind to process..
That's when I was introduced to the world of Burrito units. I'm not sure who coined it but I first heard it from Harish and so I'll attribute it as his discovery. Based on the simple principle that has been applicable since the time of dinosaurs, maybe.. HUNGER.. And the Chipotle burrito was, for some reason, in vogue..
"Two burritos for the movie ?? Totally not worth it.. "
"Alright.. let me get this shirt.. Its like missing three trips to Chipotle at best... "
"If I walk both ways to school, without paying for the bus.. It's like a free burrito every other day.. "
Even now.. a lot of my once-a-year thanksgiving shopping and India shopping was aided by the governing principles of Burrito units.. Priced at about 5.5$, a veggie burrito has brought some clarity in life and puts everything in perspective.. Adios Amigos..
